I was lucky enough to see the techno master Richie Hawtin a few days ago. Richie was playing a special Art Basel show at the famous venue LIV, located on beautiful Miami Beach. I had really high hopes for this set, and I was, for the most part, not disappointed.
The venue was crowded, although not too crowded, as Richie took the stage at approximately 1:00am. Looking comfortable, albeit not the most interested, behind the decks, Richie seamlessly blended techno track after track, bringing the crowd on a musical journey whether they liked it or not. It was interesting to watch him, and I was fortunate enough to be very close to the front for most of his set.
Here’s a good picture I took.
While the music was on point, and the crowded was vibing, Richie seemed rather uninterested. There was very minimal crowd interaction, and beyond his trademark hand swirl (seen in my video below,) Richie kept to himself. It was just another night of business for this seasoned vet, and I am not trying to hate on him or his set, because it was great and the crowd really seemed to enjoy themselves. It just felt like Richie wasn’t too invested in the evening. That being said, I still have nothing but respect for Richie and look forward to the next time I am lucky enough to see him!
Here are two quality videos I managed to take.
