Art Basel Miami: Music Edition

The words Art Basel are famous in the art world. Originating in Basel, Switzerland, Art Basel is an gathering of the biggest and bes names in modern art. Three events take place, one in Hong Kong, one in Basel, Switzerland and beautiful Miami, Florida. Art Basel Miami has already begun, and I find myself lucky enough to be heading there tomorrow.

While I will be taking in plenty of art, the main reason for my attendance is the abundance of quality music events. DJs, rappers, and bands from all over the world are converging on Miami, playing approximately 40 different events throughout the vibrant city. I unfortunately only have two nights, but I am planning to absolutely make the best of them. There are an overwhelmingly number of cool events to choose from, but I think my created schedule is on point.

Thursday, Dec 4

I have two events lined up for Thursday night. I will begin at a venue called ‘Do Not Sit On The Furniture,’ where German-born Steve Bug is hosting a special, Art Basel party. Located on South Beach, Do Not Sit On The Furniture is a unique and intimate venue that will undoubtedly be the perfect spot to watch Steve demolish the decks, the only way he knows how. Find me grooving to his seamlessly mixed set of tech house and techno!

From there I will make my way down South Beach to the chain super-club, LIV. It seems as though there are mixed feelings about LIV, and I can understand why. It’s very glitzy, very high end, very expensive, and it can easily be thought that overall the venue is not focused on the music. This is South Beach, Miami, however, a location on par with Las Vegas for its nightlife. That means that at many venues, it is all about the money. It also means you can expect an amazing, immersive, albeit crowded, environment, complete with epic laser show and top of the line sound system. I was reserved about going to LIV during Art Basel week, but once they announced the artist, I purchased tickets right away. The techno legend himself, Richie Hawtin will be taking over the decks for a special Basel Weekend event.  I could not be more excited to see Richie, who will undoubtedly bring his dark, heavy brand of techno.

Friday, Dec 5

I will spend most of the day Friday exploring the art side of Art Basel. There is an insane amount of art to look at, and way too much for one day, but I will see what I can. I have big plans for the evening though. My first stop will take me over the bridge, to mainland Miami, for a special party. Ketel One Vodka is hosting an event at the Soho Studios, bringing in Swedish DJ/Producer Cashmere Cat, as well as Midnight Magic and DJ GetLive! This event was RSVP only, and is sure to be a really special gathering. Cashmere Cat is one of a kind, and the combination of a unique Miami venue is all that is needed to take this event to the top.

After that party I will be rushing back to South Beach to a nightclub called Trade, where a reaaaaally cool event is taking place. Titled ‘When Pigs Fly,’ this night boasts two different rooms, being taken over all night long by four house/ tech/ techno masters. In Room 1, we have Dubfire and Sasha going back to back (b2b.) Dubfire is one of my favorite artists at the moment, and to see him go back to back with a legend like Sasha will be truly special. Not to be overlooked, however, is Room 2, being hosted by New York based Verboten, and featuring DJ’s Carl Craig and Matthew Dear. Carl Craig is synonymous with the Detroit techno scene and is widely viewed as one of the true house/techno pioneers. Matthew Dear, representing the Ghostly International label, will for surely be bringing his more melodic brand of house to Miami. I predict this to be the best event of Art Basel Miami 2014, and you can find me there, dancing until they kick me out!
